A Turning Point in Black Educational History
1862 The Morrill Act expanded higher education nationwide.

Why HBCUs Were Founded
After the civil war, higher education remained largely inaccessible.
Between 1861-1900 HBCUs were established across the U.S.
They became primary pathways to education and professional training.
Prairie View A&M University celebrates a century of black history. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were created to expand access to higher education. Prairie View A&M University emerged from that national effort.
Education After Emancipation
1865 The Freedman's Bureau supported the creation of black schools.
Schools trained teachers, farmers, and professionals.
Education became a foundation for progress and self-determination.
The legacy continues at Prairie View A&M University A land-grant institution rooted in access, excellence, and opportunity.
