Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Prairie View A&M University!
We offer undergraduate students a degree program leading to the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E), which is one of only six Mechanical Engineering programs among HBCU’s that is fully accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). We also offer graduate students a Master of Science in Engineering (M.S.E.) with a concentration in Mechanical Engineering. Exceptionally qualified students are able to enroll in the Five-Year B.S./M.S. degree program, which allows them to earn course credits for the M.S. degree while completing requirements for B.S.M.E. degree.
Mechanical engineering is about the design of machines—machines that we rely on every day to support our way of life, including:
• HVAC systems that keep us comfortable • turbines that generate our electricity
• refrigerators that preserve our food • machines that fabricate our electronics
• pumping systems that provide us water • cranes that erect our buildings
• engines that power our cars • medical devices that support our health
Mechanical engineering’s reach is enormous! Many industries rely on the contributions of mechanical engineers, resulting in tremendous career opportunities for our graduates.
Our curriculum, with both lecture-based courses and hands-on laboratory experiences, is designed to prepare students for success. Not only do our faculty work with students to advance their technical knowledge, but they also train students in the areas of critical thinking, ethical behavior and professional responsibility.
In addition to benefitting from learning opportunities in the classroom and laboratory, many of our students, both graduate and undergraduate, are able to participate in faculty-led research. Ongoing research projects in the Department of Mechanical Engineering cover a range of fields, including advanced manufacturing, computer aided engineering design, dynamics, control, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, materials processing and the development of mechanical devices that have medical applications. Our research efforts also include work funded by a recent $3 million grant from NASA to investigate high-pressure combustion in an environment of microgravity.
