Summer Transportation Institute
Currently, the applications are being evaluated and the selected candidates are being notified. We also have a waitlist and the applicants on the waitlist will be contacted if the selected candidates choose not to attend the program. Please check your emails and this site periodically for updates. We are not sending emails to others that have applied at this time.
All the selected candidates are expected to arrive on campus between 2 and 4 pm in building 40 of the university college on Sunday June 7, 2009. There will be a 20 minute orientation for the students and the parents at 4 pm. The selected candidates must send copy of the completed and notarized forms that they receive in their notification package by Noon, Wednesday, June 3, 2009. They must bring the originals with them when they arrive on campus (we cannot accept you without these forms). Also, please bring a state issued ID with you (school ID by itself is not sufficient as ID).

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Prairie View A&M University has been hosting Summer Transportation Institute (STI) since 2000. STI is a 4-week residential program for rising 11th and 12th grade students. STI is sponsored by Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through Texas Department of Transportation. STI recruits 15-20 bright students and exposes them to various exciting activities and field trips that provide them an understanding of the transportation industry and the careers. The students selected for this program will be offered a scholarship of $2500, which will cover all the expenses for the program. Thus the program has no out of pocket expenses for the participants. The program includes class room lectures, hands on activities, educational and recreational field trips in addition to evening and weekend enhancement and recreational activities. The participants will develop professional skills, experience college life, interact with like-minded peers and learn the college admission and financial aid procedures. The participant will also receive a certificate of completion in addition to other merit awards during the closing ceremony for which the parents and family are invited.
Typically STI starts in the first week of June and the application deadline is May 01. To apply for admission download the application package. Discuss the program with your parents/guardian and your science or math teacher and counselor. Parents or teacher/counselors must nominate the student for this program. Students must complete the application materials and attach the required documentation (two page application, teacher recommendation form, letter of nomination, essay, school transcript and other standardized test scores if available) and send to us before the deadline
