JACKSON, Miss. - The women's bowling team capped off an impressive weekend with its second straight SWAC Western Division Championship.
The Lady Panthers went 12-2 (9-3 SWAC West) during the three-day affair as they wrapped up the divisional crown and SWAC play with a 20-8 overall mark. Prairie View A&M entered the contest on a mission as they posted the round-up's highest two games (1,038/978) in addition to finishing second in total pins (24,981) and average (178.4).
“This was our best performance by far this year from beginning to end,” said head coach Glenn White. “We bowled well and were consistent as a team. The only times were struggled was when we ran out of gas in our two losses. Hopefully, we're peaking at the right time and everyone is coming together as a team.”
Individually, junior Cynthia Veney finished fourth overall with a 189.7 average and fifth in total pins (4,934). Sophomore Shanice Brown posted the fifth-highest game in the event with a mark of 246 in the contest against Texas Southern. Senior Lejewlia Lewis concluded her final round-up with an average of 182.6 and the second-highest total pinfall count on the team.
“For Veney, this was a matter of her staying focused and overcoming frustration,” said White. “She did well throughout the tournament as she accomplished her goal of earning a spot on the All-SWAC Team.
“Shanice had one of those games where everything just came together,” added White. “We worked on her follow through and release and as a result, everything came together.”
Up next for the Lady Panthers is the 2012 SWAC Bowling Championship which runs from March 2-4 at the International Research and Training Center in Arlington, Texas.
