RE: New Grant Program for Future Teachers

Recently, The College Cost Reduction and Access Act (Public Law 110-84) was approved by the United States Senate and by the House on September 7, 2007. The President signed the bill into law on September 27, 2007. As a result of the new Act, the TEACH (Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education) grant program was created for the 2008-2009 academic year. Hence, the purpose of this memorandum is to ensure that the University community is well informed about the US Department of Education's newest program.

Eligibility criteria:

  • Enrolled student in and eligible institution.
  • File an application and agreement.
  • Have a 3.25 GPA

Teacher candidates may receive:

  • $4,000 for each academic year.
  • Up to $16,000 for undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students.
  • Up to $8,000 for graduate study.
  • May be prorated for part-time study.
  • Can not exceed Cost of Attendance (COA) (amount may be reduced to meet CGA)

Agreement to serve:

  • Full-time teacher for four years within eight years of completing the course of study
  • Teach in high-need subject areas
    • Math, science, foreign language
    • Bilingual education, special education
    • Reading Specialist, or
    • Another field documented as high-need by the Federal government, State government, and local educational agency and approved by the Secretary of Education
  • Comply with the requirements for being a highly qualified teacher

Failure to complete service:

  • Amount of grant received will be treated as a William D. Ford Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan.
  • Interest will accrue from the date of the grant award

The U.S. Department of Education will not provide funding for the TEACH Grants until July I, 2008 for the upcoming 2008-2009 award year. It is the intent of the financial aid office to award this grant via our automated packaging process.
