The Prairie View A&M University women’s volleyball team was honored to learn that Sarah Garcia was named the SWAC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week following her notable performance at the tournament held at Texas Southern University on the weekend of Sept. 4-5.
Garcia, the Lady Panthers' libero (defensive specialist), recorded 45 digs, five assists and a service ace as the Lady Panthers finished 2-1 at the TSU Tournament last weekend. Her team-high 19 digs in a match against the Mississippi Valley State Lady Deviletes in particular were crucial to the victory for the Lady Panthers.
“It’s an honor for her to be recognized with this award,” noted head coach Alicia Pete. “But we still have a lot of work that needs to be done defensively.”
She also recorded a team-high 15 digs and a service ace in the Lady Panthers' hard fought loss to Texas Southern the following day. The 5-5 sophomore from McAllen, Texas leads the Lady Panthers in digs this season and is fourth overall in the SWAC.
The Prairie View women’s volleyball team is set to participate in the McNeese Tournament on Friday, Sept. 11 through Saturday, Sept.12 on the campus of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, La.
