Prairie View-Juniors Cheri Lindsay and Jasmine Hale supplied a combined 49 digs as the Prairie View A&M University Lady Panthers swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions 25-8, 25-16, and 25-21 at Williams Nicks Fieldhouse.
“The girls really came together tonight,” said Prairie View assistant coach Emil Chuidian. “Even though one third of them were sick they still came together and played almost flawless.”
Aided by a 9-0 lead to start the match, the Lady Panthers dominated the opening set 25-8. The teams played a relatively even second set, Prairie View broke the set open with a 12-3 run to win the set 25-16.
“[In my opinion] everyone stepped up tonight, I can’t even identify one player who stood out more than another. Our outside and inside players played well,” noted Chuidian.
The final set was close, but the Lady Panthers turned a 15-13 lead into a 21-15 lead half way through the final set. The Lady Lions attempted one more run before losing the final set 25-21.
Hale, a junior setter from San Antonio, led Prairie View with 25 digs while outside hitter Lindsay, also a junior from Denver, Colorado, had 24 digs and 8 kills. Other Lady Panthers who contributed to the win were Copperas Cove native Sapphire Reid with 14 digs and 7 kills. Erin Fondel recorded a team high 11 assits and four digs. Sharonda Marshall added four kills, three assists, and two assited blocks.
The Lady Panthers will now host the Lady Panther Invitational Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 to Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009. Prairie View women's volleyball team is set to open up the tournament against Arkansas Pine Bluff on Friday, Sept. 18, 2009 at 3pm. Following the opening day of the tournament Prairie View will take on Nicholls State on Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009 at 10:30am and will end tournament play aginst University of South Alabama at 2:30pm.
