How to apply:

 

  • An applicant must complete the application form within the packet provided by the College of Nursing
  • The Application Packet can be retrieved from the website: /nursing www.pvamu.edu       Click Graduate Nursing Packet at the end of page

 

TWO APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE SUBMITTED: ONE APPLICATION TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL AND ONE TO THE COLLEGE OF NURSING

  • If the applicant has completed an online application through the graduate school website a copy should be sent to the College of Nursing.
  • The application fee should be sent to the graduate school only.  NO APPLICATION FEES WILL BE ACCEPTED IN THE COLLEGE OF NURSING.

 

Criteria for Admissions:

(Information can be obtained from the application packet)

Applicants applying for admission to the graduate nursing program must meet the following criteria:

1)      Submit official transcripts covering all periods of enrollment in institutions of higher

education.

2)      Successful completion of a basic statistics course and a health assessment course.

3)      Possess a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of

coursework toward the undergraduate nursing degree and a minimum GPA of 3.0 (B

average) in all prior graduate course work.

4)      Submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores that are within ten (10) years.

5)      Submit three (3) letters of recommendation from professional nurses, one of which must be from a former nursing faculty.

6)      Submit a current resume´ or curriculum vita.

7)      Present official documentation of a negative criminal background check and drug screening tests.

          8)  Meet the CON health requirements

9)  Complete an individual interview with graduate faculty/committee.

 

The decision for admission to the graduate program is determined by a review of the application by the Graduate Studies Admission committee based upon the composite picture of information presented to meet the admission criteria and an interview.

What is the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)?

This is a computerized exam the Graduate School requires all applicants to take that tests on analytical skills in addition to verbal and quantitative reasoning.

  • Although, it is required, students can be accepted into the program without it on a conditional basis until the test is taken. 
  • The test must be taken within the first 12 hours of course work.
  • Currently there is no required or set score for admission. (If the person says, what if my GPA is high, i.e. 3.5 and above) All applicants still are required to take the exam. This is a requirement established by the Graduate School of the University.
  • Cost for GRE?  Approximately $130.00
  • For more information, the potential student can go to the GRE website at www.gre.com.
  • If ask for your institution, it is set up to go directly to the main campus.
  • Request a personal copy of your scores. Once received mail a copy to the College of Nursing

Immunization/Health Records

All students are required to submit records of a physical exam, TB skin test and/or chest X-

ray and record of immunizations. Immunization data is submitted once only on admission.

A physical exam TB skin test/chest X-ray is required annually.

Transferring Credits

  • Applicants or students may transfer up to 6.0 semester credit hours (SCH), which is equivalent to 2 courses.
  • Courses that cannot be transferred are specialty and clinical courses

      • NURS 5215 Childbearing/Childrearing
      • NURS 5245 Adult/Elderly
      • NURS 5257 Mgt of Complex Health Problems (Practicum Course)
    • ADM Courses
      • NURS 5403 – Organizational Theory
      • NURS 5413 – Health Care Mgt
      • NURS 5423 – Health Care Economics & Financial Mgt
      • NURS 5433 – Nursing Administration Role Practicum
    • EDU Courses
      • NURS 5303 – Program & Curriculum Design
      • NURS 5313 – Instructional Strategies & Methods
      • NURS 5323 – Evaluation in Nursing Education
      • NURS 5333 – Nursing Education Role Practicum
    • Post-Majors: FNP, ADM or EDU
      • All core courses & electives can be transferred.
No Specialty Courses can be transferred
