In 1992 the PVAMU NROTC became a member of the Naval ROTC Houston Consortium. With the establishment of this unit, college student no longer had to leave the Prairie View/Greater Houston area for Navy and Marine Corps officer training.
The NROTC Unit Houston Consortium consists of the Prairie View A & M University NROTC unit in Prairie View, TX and the Rice University NROTC Unit in Houston, TX. The Prairie View unit normally consists of about 70 midshipmen who are all students of the university and conducts most of the NROTC activities on campus. The Rice University unit normally has around 40 midshipmen who are either students of Rice University, University of Houston, Texas Southern, or Houston Baptist University, but convene at Rice to conduct NROTC activities.
