Building on leading retention data and recognized "best practice" research, COMPASS is designed to help Prairie View students in their second year and beyond navigate towards graduation by providing the following services:

Academic Advisement and Academic Counseling

COMPASS provides students with academic advisement and academic counseling that goes beyond simple course selection. The COMPASS staff assists students with identifying the source of their academic difficulties in order to increase their achievement. 

COMPASS provides assistance with: 

·  Selecting and/or Re-evaluating an Academic Major

·  Selecting Semester Courses

·  Developing an Educational Achievement Plan 

·  Monitoring Academic Progress

 

Project Reclamation Graduation

COMPASS assists Prairie View students who have not enrolled for two (2) or more consecutive semesters with re-entering the University.  Students interested in reconnecting with Prairie View should contact the Student Academic Success office via phone: 936-261-1040 or via email:  COMPASS@pvamu.edu.

 

Campus-Wide Referrals &  Tutorial Services

Campus-Wide Referrals

The campus-wide referral service works in conjunction with other student resource learning centers and services to provide students with guidance on finding tutorial centers, testing centers, test preparation manuals, wellness support, and supplemental instruction.

Tutorial Services & Supplemental Academic Services

In addition to providing a campus-wide referral service, COMPASS provides tutorial and supplemental services for courses that are identified as having a high fail or withdrawal rate, known as “gatekeeper” courses. Furthermore, COMPASS provides special event tutorial sessions for monthly, midterm and final examinations. Special event tutorials are scheduled on Sunday afternoons starting at 2pm and weekdays starting at 5pm.

Supplemental Academic Services include access to instructional software in Spanish, mathematics, biology and other subjects. In addition, study material/guides for the LSAT, MCAT, DAT, GRE, MAT and GMAT will also be available for use.   

Academic & Life Enhancing Workshops

COMPASS, in conjunction with other available academic and wellness services, provides students with academic and life enhancement workshops on topics that include:

· Time Management

· Goal Setting

· Note-taking Techniques

· Financial Literacy
