Interesting Facts

1969 – First year of the U.S. Naval Flight Indoctrination Program at Prairie View A&M College. Five Midshipmen attended the ground school and flight training.

Within weeks, all of the participants flew their first solo flights at Hooks Memorial Airport in Tomball, Texas.

1971 – 2nd Lt. Lawrence Perea the first Hispanic commissioned

1972 - Lindsay Penson the first female commissioned

1978 - Lafayette Carol the first male Battalion Commander

1981 -- Vinca A. Dixon the first female Marine commissioned

1985 --Largest female class commissioned (six)

2002 -- Prairie View A&M University NROTC graduated Frank D. Jackson, (Class of l973) was named Mayor of Prairie View, Texas (Present)

2002 - -- Feb. 8 – Ensign (rank at time) Kirkland Matthews awarded Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism for saving a sailor from drowning.
