PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (October 8, 2020) – Prairie View A&M University’s 25th Fall Commencement will occur on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. The commencement speaker is Khambrel Marshall.
Marshall is a member of the KPRC 2 Severe Weather Team and delivers the weekend forecasts to help you plan your day. He is also the host of “Houston Newsmakers with Khambrel Marshall,” a weekly program that explores news in Texas’s Southeast region.
Marshall has had a multifaceted career in broadcasting. While studying for his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication from Arizona State University, he began his television career as a weekend sports anchor in Phoenix. Through the years, he was a sports reporter, sports director, then primary news anchor in Miami before joining KPRC-TV as a weekday anchor in May 1999. He took a newsroom leadership role as Executive Producer for several years before accepting the weekend meteorologist position. The self-proclaimed “weather geek” earned his Broadcast Meteorology Certification from Mississippi State University.
A winner of numerous awards in journalism and community service, Mr. Marshall has won one of broadcasting’s top honors, the Emmy, for a feature series titled “Guardians at Sea,” chronicling the U.S. Coast Guard’s efforts to rescue Cuban and Haitian refugees crossing the Florida Straits.
He has a tireless commitment to volunteer service and has been honored as March of Dimes Texas Communications Volunteer of the Year. He was Chairman of the 2011 March for Babies in Houston, the largest walk in the United States for the March of Dimes. More than 45,000 walkers raised more than $3 million for March of Dimes research during his tenure as chairman. He was co-chair of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure for two years and helped raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research.
One of 12 recipients to receive the National Community Service Award from the Westinghouse Corporation, Marshall was named “Outstanding Young Floridian” by the Fort Lauderdale Jaycees for his humanitarian efforts in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. He is a past Chairman of the Executive Committee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Texas, and past board member of Collaborative for Children, March of Dimes, Texas Gulf Coast, and Susan G. Komen Houston. He is currently on the Board of Directors of the A.D. Players at the George Theater. He is also Chair of the Board of the YMCA of Greater Houston, the largest childcare provider in the Houston region and fourth-largest YMCA in the United States.
Mr. Marshall is a Senior Fellow in the American Leadership Forum: Houston/Gulf Coast Chapter (ALF). The intense ALF one-year program joins and strengthens diverse community leaders to serve the public. He has been married since 1979 to his wife Debbie; they have three daughters and three grandchildren.
