PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (June 28, 2024) – Prairie View A&M University has announced Texas Representative Ron Reynolds (D-Missouri City) as the keynote speaker for its 113th Summer Commencement. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, at 9 a.m. in the William “Billy” J. Nicks, Sr. Building, also known as the Baby Dome.

Reynolds, who was sworn in on Jan. 10, 2011, as the State Representative for House District 27, is currently serving his seventh term in the Texas House. He is the first African American State Representative in Fort Bend County since Reconstruction. He served as the House Minority Whip during the 83rd and 84th Legislative sessions.

Notably, Reynolds was named “2021 87th Session Legislator of the Year” by Fort Bend United and The Young & the Politics. His colleagues in the House have also recognized him as “Freshman Legislator of the Year,” and he has been honored as “Public Servant of the Year” by the Houston Minority Contractors Association.

In addition to his legislative duties, Reynolds serves as the Chair of the Texas Legislative Black Caucus and Vice Chair of the Texas Energy & Climate Caucus. He is the founder and past Chair of the Texas House Progressive Caucus and acts as the Legislative Leader for both the Texas State NAACP and the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats. Reynolds is also the ranking member on the House Committee on Environmental Regulation and Land & Resource Management.

Before his election to the Texas House, Reynolds served as an Associate Municipal Judge for the City of Houston. He has held leadership roles as the Past President of the Houston Lawyers Association and the Missouri City & Vicinity NAACP. Reynolds is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and 100 Black Men of America.

Reynolds has been awarded three honorary doctorates: A Doctor of Humanities from Trinity International University of Ambassadors, a Doctor of Philosophy in Humanitarianism, and a Doctorate of Divinity from Pendleton Chapel Seminary.

PVAMU’s Summer Commencement is set to be a momentous occasion with over 200 candidates for degrees, and the University is honored to have Representative Reynolds deliver this year’s address.
