PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (Dec. 22, 2023) – 2023 was a remarkable year for Prairie View A&M University! Here are some of the most significant achievements captured during the past 365 days right here on “The Hill.”
15. APLU Designation
Prairie View A&M University achieves the prestigious designation as ‘Innovation and Economic Prosperity University.’
The Association of Public Land-Grant Universities designated PVAMU as an Innovation and Economic Prosperity University, a nod to the University’s dedication to research excellence and community and economic engagement. Only 85 institutions across the nation have earned this distinguished recognition.
14. New Academic Facility
There was a grand opening of a new building within PVAMU’s Roy G. Perry College of Engineering.
It’s official! Prairie View A&M University opened its $70 million Engineering Classroom and Research Building. ENCARB is the 6th building to be added to the Roy G. Perry College of Engineering complex in its 75-year history.
13. New Transportation Center
Making History: PVAMU launched a national University Transportation Center.
PVAMU became the first Historically Black College/University to launch a $40 million University Transportation Center. The University is now poised to become a key player in transportation research and innovation in the United States.
12. Expanded Academic Offerings
PVAMU launched its School of Public and Allied Health.
SPAH is the 10th college/school at the Historically Black University and offers bachelor’s degrees in health, public health and kinesiology, as well as master’s degrees in health and physical education.
11. A Visit from Harvard and the Federal Reserve

“I drew such inspiration today from meeting with students at Prairie View A&M University who will help shape our region’s future.”
Those are reflections from the President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Lorie K. Logan, following her visit to PVAMU. Harvard President Lawrence S. Bacow also visited campus, the final installation of Former PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons’ Conversation series.
10. A New President
Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande began her role as the ninth president of PVAMU.
New Leadership, Same Mission: Excellence! Dr. Tomikia P. LeGrande assumed her position as PVAMU’s ninth president this year. “I look forward to working with the faculty, staff, and community as we honor and build upon the University’s powerful legacy and upward trajectory,” she said.
9. A New Writer-in-Residence
PVAMU announced its 2023-2024 writer-in-residence, Attica Locke.
Attica Locke is a distinguished American fiction author and an acclaimed writer-producer for television and film. She follows Nikki Giovanni and Kevin Powell as the third Writer-in-Residence of PVAMU’s Toni Morrison Writing Program.
8. A New Marketing Campaign
PVAMU launched a marketing campaign to highlight its excellence in higher education.
“Excellence Lives Here” was designated as the new tagline, focusing on the University’s rich history, academic programs, transformative student experiences, groundbreaking research, inspiring faculty and notable alumni.
7. A New Name and a New Match
PVAMU’s College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources received a state “Ag Match.”
The “Ag Match” was a significant victory this year for PVAMU’s College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources, formerly known as the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences. The funding furthers the College’s mission to enhance lives through education, research, and public service.
6. A Pioneer
Stephanie Tilley made history as PVAMU’s first Fulbright scholar.
Stephanie Tilley, a student in PVAMU’s Doctor of Philosophy Program, became the first PVAMU student to join the ranks of the prestigious Fulbright U.S. Student Program. For over 70 years, the study-abroad exchange initiative has attracted college and university faculty, administrators, students, researchers, artists, and professionals from various countries.
5. An Award-winning Documentary
PVAMU was proud to be a part of KHOU 11’s award-winning series “Juneteenth 1865-2023: Freedom to Learn.”
The series looks at the history of Juneteenth in Galveston, with a focus on the fight for equality in education.
4. TedxPVAMU
TEDxPVAMU offered ‘Food for Thought.’
Three years and still going strong! PVAMU hosted its third TEDx talk, furthering TEDx’s overall mission to investigate and discover “ideas worth spreading.”
3. KPVU-TV @ The Chevron Championship
Communications and Honors Program students of PVAMU and KPVU-TV broadcasted live from the Inspiration Dome at The Chevron Championship! An event on the LPGA Tour, The Chevron Championship is one of the tour’s five major championships.
2. A Championship-filled Year
The PVAMU Panthers delivered an amazing athletic year.
Among this year’s titles, the Lady Panthers claimed the 2023 SWAC Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, Women’s Bowling claimed their 2023 SWAC Championship, and Softball got their SWAC Championship. Football also nailed their 2023 SWAC Western Division Championship title. Goooo Panthers!
1. A Legacy that Continues...
Prairie View A&M now has nearly 83,000 alums.
The legacy continues at Prairie View A&M! One-thousand, eight-hundred and seventy-three students received their degrees on “The Hill” this year. That includes a record number of doctoral degrees awarded during the 141st Spring Commencement Convocation.
“You’ve been truly privileged to have the education that others’ efforts afforded you. Now, go and make it mean something. Use your voice,” said Spring Commencement Speaker and Former PVAMU President Ruth J. Simmons.
