Prairie View A&M University Extension’s Family and Community Health (FCH) recently wrapped up its impactful Mental Health Conference on July 17, 2024. Themed “Breaking the Silence: Empowering Voices for Mental Health Awareness,” the conference was a crucial platform for engaging discussions and enhancing awareness about mental health issues among diverse populations. The event was dedicated to breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, promoting empathy towards individuals facing such challenges, and fostering a supportive environment for mental health conversations. Moreover, the conference set the stage for future collaborations, partnerships, and initiatives aimed at advancing mental health and well-being within communities across Texas.
The event featured keynote speakers such as Kevin Berthia, a Suicide Survivor and advocate; SaulPaul, a Grammy-nominated Musician; and Alauna Curry, Ph.D., a Trauma Psychologist. Their insights and experiences added significant value to the discussions held during the conference.
Additionally, attendees had access to a wellness room where they could indulge in stress-relieving activities, including 15-minute massages. Various mental health vendors and businesses were also present, offering their services and resources to support mental health initiatives further. The conference successfully created a collaborative and supportive environment for all participants, emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness and well-being in our communities.
