PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas (February 11, 2025) — As he prepares to graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering from Prairie View A&M University, Christopher L. Houston is gaining recognition for his academic excellence and groundbreaking research on hydrogen embrittlement and its applications.
Houston, a senior, from Houston, Tx, has immersed himself in the RISE Program under the mentorship of Shahin Shafiee, Ph.D., an associate professor and esteemed research scientist at PVAMU, Houston’s research focuses on addressing the critical challenges posed by hydrogen as an energy carrier and storage medium. “Hydrogen is abundant and offers a cost-effective solution for storing energy from renewable sources like wind and solar,” Houston explains. “However, its reactive nature presents significant challenges in storage device durability and safety.”
Throughout his participation in the RISE Program, Houston has honed his skills in public speaking, project management, and research methodology. “This experience has been transformative,” he reflects. “It’s not just about academic knowledge; it’s about preparing to make a meaningful impact beyond the campus borders.”
Beyond academia, Houston has secured a full-time position as an Associate Systems Engineer at L3Harris, with aspirations to continue his career within the Aerospace and Defense Industries. “My goal is to leverage my engineering background to contribute to advancements in sustainable energy solutions,” he says.
Houston’s dedication to his field is underscored by his commitment to addressing the complexities of energy storage. “The intermittent nature of renewable energy sources necessitates efficient storage solutions,” he notes. “My research aims to mitigate embrittlement issues in hydrogen systems, paving the way for more reliable and sustainable energy storage.”
As he prepares to graduate, Houston remains grateful for the opportunities and mentorship he has received at Prairie View A&M University. “I am proud to embody our motto, ‘Prairie View Produces Productive People,’ as I embark on this next chapter,” he affirms.
Christopher L. Houston exemplifies the spirit of innovation and dedication to “excellence” that defines Prairie View A&M University’s community of scholars and researchers.
The RISE Program, led by Prairie View A&M University’s Vice President for Research and Innovation, Magesh Rajan, Ph.D., P.E., aims to drive critical research and innovation. It fosters interdisciplinary collaboration among PVAMU faculty, students, and university partners, advancing impactful discoveries and solutions.
